Dear Friends and Supporters

I have just concluded a very long and challenging session- too long. You said get it done, and I was prepared to do that as early as last December. But in the end, we got it right.

Passage of three major reform bills on pensions, K-12 health care benefits, and a four-year balance budget amendment will shape Washington State’s budget sustainability for years to come.

As the ranking Republican on the House of Representatives Ways and Means Committee, I was an integral part of the negotiation team that spent countless hours in the Governor’s Office working toward a successful resolution of the State’s $2 billion operating budget deficit. This solution upheld the principles I set forth in the first supplemental budget that was released in February: funding education first, avoiding cuts to our most vulnerable populations of the mentally ill, developmentally disabled, and elderly, safeguarding our families from early release of violent offenders, avoiding game-playing shifts of fiscal obligations, and requiring no general tax increases.

Now it is time to set my re-election campaign in high gear. With redistricting moving me from the 20th Legislative District to the 2nd District, I will need your early and strong financial support to allow me time and expenses to renew my contacts from the prior redistricting and meet my new constituents and voters.

The outcome of the 2012 election will be the major event that sets the direction of our state for the next decade. Your early support will ensure we have a strong voice and the right leadership team in the Washington State House of Representatives to meet this challenge.

When I contacted you last fall, House Republicans had two primary goals: passage of a balanced budget resolution and passage of legislative polices that would create and retain jobs. I was instrumental in helping to get the first, and in sponsoring one of the few bills that addressed the latter.

As many of you know, we had one of the strongest campaign teams in the state’s 20th district. I believe my new team in the 2nd district of Senator Randy Becker and Representative J T Wilcox will be just as powerful and am looking forward to working with them.

I need your financial help today to begin my journey into the 2nd District and rural Pierce and Thurston County. It is very important that I solidify my campaign funding early so that I can focus on the issues that are critical to our district and the state.

These issues and my goals have been consistent:

  • Creating and retaining family wage jobs;
  • Finding market-based solutions to controlling costs and improving our healthcare system;
  • Providing a clear and strong commitment to our public education system and funding it; and
  • Preparing state budgets that are truthful, fully funded, sustainable and accountable to our taxpayers.

Your voice, your vote and your financial support have been the foundation for sending me to the Washington State Legislature for eight successive terms. It is an honor to serve you. I need your financial help again as I attempt to bring common sense, reason and financial soundness into the policies and budgets that will direct the future of our families, businesses, community and state.

Please fill out the enclosed envelope and let us begin an early and successful start together to get Washington working again.

Thank you for your continual support,

Representative Gary Alexander (R)
District 2, Position 1
