Rep. Gary Alexander's statement on House tax increase legislation
Washington House Republicans, Published March 8, 2010
Democrats in the House of Representatives are expected to pass tax increases tonight which would take nearly $900 million out of the pockets of families, consumers and employers in just the first year of implementation. Rep. Gary Alexander, R-Olympia, and ranking Republican on the House Ways and Means Committee released the following statement: “This bill takes us from ‘priorities of government,’ to government spending is the priority. It is shortsighted, unsustainable and places our state’s future economic recovery at unnecessary risk. It places special interests above the public’s interests. It attempts to protect government bureaucracy at the expense of private-sector investment. “In their efforts to fulfill promises they can’t keep, Democrat budget writers are sacrificing the one thing our people need the most – jobs. We are not the federal government – we can’t just print an additional billion dollars. It will come out of an economy that is limping along on life support. We’re talking about real people and real employers that will have a real effect on all of us. “I continue to believe that the best way to create new revenue is to create new jobs. The idea of taking more money from those who have less is regressive and is part of a familiar but failed budget strategy that will lead to a series of future budget shortfalls and future job losses.”
